Cocktail of the week until Monday 13th April 2009

Ooh la la…

It’s a term that the French invented, “ooh la la”, it is a sense of surprise with a cheeky undertone. Yes girly, but also very cliché! It is much like our take on the French Martini.

We start with Chambord, very French and very sweet, made with rare black raspberries and mixed with other berries. It comes in a regal bottle, gold and gaudy like the Moulin Rouge, and is reminiscent of a bygone era of decadence, bohemianism and ‘art nouveau’. To this we add Gin as opposed to vodka, a little more traditional in the ‘Martini’ sense, but the medicinal botanicals and juniper infusion of the gin balances well with the berry notes of the Chambord.

In order not to overindulge on all things sweet, we balance this cocktail with pineapple juice, in the tradition of a French Martini, and with lemon juice, to add some character and some pizzazz! The result is almost as flamboyant as a cabaret dancer in a corset, fishnets and lots of feathers! In order to restore some form of innocence, we finish or version of this French martini with a maraschino cherry. Try this concoction, and the words will roll off your lips – “OOH LA LA”

ooh-la-la
